Puggle Winter Accessories

Do you love to dress up your dog in fashionable shirts, sweaters and coats?  Chic winter accessories to keep your Puggle warm are just a Google search away. Just the other day, I was surfing the Internet and came upon a site that sells all kinds of accessories small enough to fit our Puggle. Sometimes I think my wife takes dog winter accessories to the extreme, but she believes that it’s important to keep our dog warm.

In fact, a Cornell University virologist has isolated a highly contagious flu virus that can be life threatening to smaller dogs. Symptoms are similar to kennel cough (a dry, harsh hacking cough) and aren’t limited to the Puggle breed. The virus is airborne and all breeds can catch this flu so knowledge of your pet’s habits and vigilance are important. Having a strong immune system is the best way to avoid coming down with symptoms if/when you dog is exposed to the virus.

The safest way to avoid the spread of the flu when walking your dog is to avoid interaction with unknown dogs. As with humans, the cold air itself won’t cause your dog to be ill but the spread of germs from one dog to the other can create problems.

Check your Puggle’s feet periodically for snow and ice build up if you live in colder seasonal climates. A little snow between the pads could cause problems as the foot pads are sensitive and can become easily frost bitten.

Avoid walking your Puggle on a windy day. Their eyes are large and wide open like the Pug and small particles can easily irritate their eyes. More than other small dog breeds, Pugs tend to have eye infections because of the shape and size of their eyes.

All dogs love to walk and walking our Puggle in the park is a lot of fun. Now that we’ve purchased a harness for her, she no longer pulls on her collar and leash. It’s a more comfortable and enjoyable walk for us both.

It’s up to us to keep our smaller, four legged friends safe, happy and warm on cool winter days. If you’re not into accessories, that’s okay. A good harness and leash are all you need. Your Puggle will just enjoy being with you and observing the many sights, sounds and smells a daily walk can bring.
